Is my marriage legal if we are U.S. citizens, but we got married in Canada?

It will be recognized by the Canadian government, but not the US government (where it really matters, in your case). You may be able to 'transfer' your marriage to the US, after paying a fee of course.

Americans can get married anywhere in the world and it will be legal in the United States as long as the ceremony is recognized by that country.

As long as you have a marriage certificate from the country in which you were married in and you followed the guidelines from that country then your marriage is legal in Canada and the United States. All you need in order to prove your marriage is legal is the marriage licanse.

Yes your marriage can be legal by registering and collecting the certificate from there. Try to invite people's from U. S. and make their availability in functions.
