Microsoft Word is an application. Works is also an application. They are separate programs. Word comes in the Microsoft Office Suite of products, and is more widely used. Works is the "cheaper" version of Word and has less options.

In a nutshell: You need to see the definition for software first. There's the operating system (e.g. Windows) and there are applications. Of course, if your software is not the OS itself, then it's application. Both Works and Microsoft Word are applications, but they have different levels of capabilities. Word does more kind of jobs than Works.
