Meteorology is the study of the processes in the atmosphere that effect our weather. The science of meteorology goes back hundreds of years but didn't make much progress until the 18th century. The 19th century saw more advancement with the setup of an observation network. Computers have brought about even more advancements. The sun's energy helps to drive the system.

Meteorology is not the study of the sun. Meteorology is the study of weather processes including forecasting, atmosphere, etc. Although the sun often plays a big role in the process of coming up with a long range forecast, that kind of ties in with atronomy in dealing with solar activity and sunspots.

The heat of the sun plays a significant role in meteorology. However, meteorology is not the study of the sun. It is the study of climate and weather. "Meteor" is the root word, and refers to something falling from the sky.

Meteorology is defined as the study of the atmosphere and its conditions, mainly the weather. Since the heat of the sun is a critical element of Earth's climates, its effects are studied, but strictly speaking the sun itself isn't a main component of the science.
