Conducting auto repair on your own is feasible. The most important thing you'll need to do this is the proper tools as well as an appropriate workspace. You should only attempt to repair something based on your confidence, if you have any reservations it's probably best to hire a mechanic.

It depends on what the repair is that your doing. I've been in the auto industry for 9 years now and I do alot of work myself. Some things require special tools but if you contact the dealer or autozone store you can usually rent them for a small fee. I wouldn't attemp any big jobs.

Depending on the repair you need done, many auto repairs can be done by the vehicles owner. I wouldn't attempt any repair that requires special tools or skilled training. Simple repairs made by the vehicle owner can save you a bundle in labor charges.

Certain repairs can easily be done (light bulbs, fluid top up, wipers, etc.) but, when you get into the more sophisticated components like aluminum cylinder heads that can easily be warped - and get expensive - it's best to let a professional handle it. Cost may be higher but, if you have to re-do the job it's less expensive overall.
