Six year old Percocet is almost sure to be out of date. A lot of medications lose their potency as they age. Some become unstable and could possibly cause harm. The decreased potency of the narcotic and the risk of harm makes the choice to avoid this medicine clear.

All medications have an expiration date at which time the active ingredients of the medication will no longer be effective. While taking six year old Percocet may not necessarily cause any adverse reactions it is also unlikely that the medication will be effective. It is not good practice to keep medications beyond the expiration date.

Because the effectiveness and overall safety of Percocet have not been established in children, you may not want to give it to your six year old. Never share medications that were prescribed for you for someone else. For a child, it's a good idea to use Tylenol, or some other OTC medication for pain relief.

While it certainly won't kill you if you take a medication that is 6 years old, the medicine will not be effective. That means that if you are taking it to treat your pain, it will not work as well as something that is new.
