There is no documented evidence stating that dying your hair is harmful to you or the baby during pregnancy. In fact, according to lab tests done on rats very little of the chemicals used in hair dye actually get absorbed through the skin. However, it is still safer to wait until the second trimester to dye your hair.

If nothing is absorbed into your body, it is fine, like applying mascara. If anything is injected into the skin, this is not a safe practice. Hair dye for your head hair is a greater risk because it often contains caustic and harmful chemicals. But do avoid tattoos as well.

It is safe to use dyes with no ammonia during pregnancy. Just make sure you are in a well ventilated area.

Both times I was pregnant I dyed my hair at home. Both of my children were born perfectly healthy and neither pregnancy had any complications. The amount of dye used on a head of hair is more than that used for eyebrows, so I am sure you will be fine.
