Is it safe to breathe elevator shaft fumes?

The vent was blowing on me and I took in some of the smoke.

Elevator shafts do not themselves produce fumes. It is merely a column of space where the elevator and its cables reside. The elevator should not be producing "smoke." If this is the case, notify the authorities. Otherwise, assume the kitchen or the laundry are the source the "fumes."

no no it was the vent where the air gets pushed out from, it smelled like car exhaust but it was a vent where air was being pushed out from the shaft.  add a comment

Any kind of fumes is not okay to breathe. That is why they are called "fumes". Inhaling it all day could have some really bad repercussions but just breathing it once should be okay but just don't huff it or look suspicious while doing so. You should probably keep your friends out of this too.

Not really. If it only happened once or twice I wouldn't worry too much about it but you'll want to avoid long term exposure.
