The hummingbird is the only bird that can fly backwards as their wing motion is far more similar to bees than avian flight. A hummingbird can rotate each of its wings in a circle, employing upstroke and downstroke, which also makes it the only bird that can hover. Just one of the many reasons they are so delightful to watch!

It is not aerodynamically possible for most birds to fly backwards. Birds use a down strok to power their flight. The hummingbird is the only bird that can fly backwards. They do this by rotating their wings and their unique up stroke strength. Hummingbirds can fly right, left, forwards, backwards and sometimes upside down.

No. It is not possible for a bird to fly backwards. The physics of lift combined with the shape of a birds wings and functionality of the flight feathers require a bird to fly forward. Otherwise, the bird would not get off the ground.
