Charlotte is a relatively inexpensive destination to fly to, since it is the hub of US Airways. Since it is the hub, you can connect to virtually everywhere US Airways flies. You could try fly into Asheville or Raleigh, but since these are not hub airports, the cost is unlikely to be lower than Charlotte.

Charlotte/Dougas International Airport is the main airport for the area and is generally the cheapest airport to fly in to, Greensboro, Greenville/Spartanburg, Raleigh and Atlanta are all alternative choices in the North Carolina area, the price will ultimately depend on what country and city you are flying from.

Charlotte, NC, is the biggest city around, so it's doubtful that you'll find a cheaper airport that's worth driving from. Nonetheless, Charlotte is a smallish city, so airfares may be higher than in bigger centers. To get a cheaper fare, check online travel sites like travelocity and expedia as well as the websites of individual carriers.
