Butter is better than shortening. Butter has fifty percent less saturated fat than shortening. When I was younger my mom always used shortening but for my family I use butter. Looking at the nutritional facts for both butter and shortening, shortening has polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat. Butter does not have either one of these.

Shortening contains transfats which are not healthy. Although butter is a saturated fat, I think it's better, and what you make will have a better flavor using it.

Typically Shortening would be better for something such as a pie crust or doughs. Butter is the healthier option (olive oil even better) for your standard cooking

Butter gives more flavor, while shortening gives more body to the product. Opt for a butter-flavored shortening to get the best of both in baking; if sauteeing, go with butter.
