It's almost always better to just go ahead and replace a faulty transmission. As repairs can be expensive and ineffective if done by an amateur. As long as you're not being "hosed" take it to a shop.

It is always better to rebuild the transmission, but if you happen to be on a budget and don't want to spend the large amount to rebuild the transmission, you should find a used part. The transmissions usually come from wrecked vehicles and are usually in good working order when you buy them.
