I would not shave the dog unless he is badly matted. Shaving does not reduce shedding, or keep the dog cooler in the summer. You should have your pet groomed about every 6 weeks, they will do the nails, anal glands. trim hair and brush him out.

Unless the dog is extremely matted and/or dirty that cannot be groomed out of, you should not shave a dog. The hair is a protection for the skin and regulating body temperature (whether it is hot or cold). If you are concerned about the hot weather, try grooming the dog often, with shedding tools, to help remove loose hair.

This really isn't a good idea, except for medically related treatment. Better to buy a "thinning" shears that has serrated edges and a rounded tip. This dog should be brushed frequently, and there should be no need to shave, unless he has a serious skin condition- then see a vet.
