Is Hydroxyz commonly used to treat psychiatric disorders?

I thought it was an antihistamine.

This is a good question. Before considering any treatment you should consult your local doctor. Just because a treatment works well for someone else doesn't mean it will, or is even safe for you. If you have any allergies or reactions that you know of let your family doctor know.

It is an antihistamine with sedative properties.It is used in the mental disorders(anxiety,dementia)as a short-term treatment for nervousness and tension,before and after surgery to relieve anxiety;also used in psychatric research.

Do you mean Hydroxyzine? If so-Hydroxyzine Oral HCI is used for the short-term treatment of nervousness and tension that may occur with certain mental/mood disorders (anxiety, dementia). It may also be used to treat patients before/after surgery, to calm them down. It belongs in the class of drugs called antihistamines.
