Cold sores are caused by infection of the area around the mouth or nose with HSV (herpes simplex virus). They are also called oral herpes. There are two types of HSV: type 1 (HSV-1) is the most common cause of oral herpes and type 2 (HSV-2) most commonly causes genital herpes. Like genital herpes, HSV-1 is passed through skin-to-skin contact.

No, I don't think it is the same thing, but it is a type of the herpes family.Cold sores usually come from a cold or sometimes the sunshine. A viral infection could cause cold sores. Fever could be a cause of them also. I have even heard that your tummy could get out of whack, and could cause cold sores.
