Fiberglass tape is often used for repairing sheetrock because of it's great strength and durability. However it is more expensive. Fiberglass tape is better but not necessary.

Paper tape is better because it's very thin and its surface is completely smooth. Therefore it's easier to embed in joint compound. Also because a sheet of sheetrock has paper on the exterior surface, paper tape is the most logical material to use.

Fiberglass tape is not better than paper tape, but it does have its uses. It is faster to use and much easier for beginners; but it is not as good in the long term. Eventually the framing your Sheetrock is attached to will settle and fiberglass tape can lead to hairline cracking that is usually avoided wit paper tape.
