There is some evidence that a girl who starts menstruating before age 12 may be at higher risk for breast cancer, endometrial cancer, or ovarian cancer. Because all three of these cancers are related to estrogen levels in the body, an early start to menstruation essentially exposes the body to more estrogen and thus to a greater risk of cancer.

Early menstruation is not a sign of any specific problem, but is something you should discuss with a doctor if there is concern. There is speculation that girls are beginning menstruation earlier due to the amount of hormones given to animals used for food.

Culture, genetics, and lifestyle play a part in how early a girl starts menstruating. It does not put you at risk of having more problems later in life. Although you may start menopause earlier.

If you're talking about a period that starts earlier than it should in a given month, it can look very similar to other conditions like fatal uterine cancer. It is important to see a doctor if you are having this problem.
