Is crate training a good way to stop excessive barking?

It's a good way to stop them from barking because they feel safe in their kennels. They will also associate the barking as bad behavior in time.

Depends on the dog. It could work if handled properly, not as punishment. The crate could represent a source of comfort. If he stops after being placed in the crate, does he begin again after being released? Is he stressed, separated from family, bored? These need to be addressed. Overall I would vote no in using a crate for training.
