Carbon dioxide is a molecule. By itself, it is a pure substance, although humans rarely encounter pure carbon dioxide. In nature, carbon dioxide mixes with other elements and molecules, including nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, sulfuric acid, and ozone, to form what we mortals call--air.
