Yes, majority of the time such an entity is legitimate. In order to guarantee legitimacy, you need to make sure the program is reputable. You can do this by checking other online programs to view others' thoughts on that program.

I used to work for a survey company that paid people for participation. Look out for companies that are using the survey to try to sell you something.

There are no laws prohibiting companies from paying you to take surveys, and many legitimate companies do this. The pay is often very low, and you should be suspicious if you are offered large sums of money for taking surveys, or if a company claims to pay enough for you to quit your current job.
