Is a lap seat belt enough?

I hate the shoulder strap, it rubs my skin and it annoying. But if I were to get in a car crash only wearing a lap belt, would that protect me?

A lap belt on its own can lead to head, neck, or back injuries. In a head on collision, your upper body needs to be restrained from slamming into the dashboard, steering wheel, or the back of the front seats. There are products you can buy which would make shoulder straps more bearable.

No, actually lap belts are the most dangerous. If your car has a shoulder strap belt, it's actually illegal to not wear it fully. Lap belts can cut you in half, literally, and cause internal bleeding. Get a soft strap cover for your shoulder strap and be safe.

A lap belt is not considered enough. Lap belts do not offer the protection that a shoulder belt provides. Shoulder belts keep you secured in the car, and more evenly distribute the pressure from a crash. It is also illegal not to be wearly a seat belt properly.

Wearing a lap belt protects you better than wearing no belt, but still not as well as the shoulder strap. Consider getting a seat belt shoulder pad to minimize rubbing.
