In your New York apartment, how long can your landlord legally let you be without water?

A "habitable" residence must have running water. It is not unreasonable for water to be turned off for short periods for plumbing problems or maintenance, but more than an hour or two is unreasonable. If the water is turned off for lengthy periods, call the Health Department immediately to report the problem.

No landlord in ANY state can deny you basic services such as heat and water. Ever. Even if you are in arrears on rent, denial of services is a criminal offense on your landlord's part. Call your ward boss or the police who will advise you who to call.
