The first generation iPod was launched on 23rd October of 2001, when it was simply called the iPod. Apple started called original-style iPods the iPod classic in 2007, and retrospectively applied the name to all of the models.

It was first released on October 23, 2001. It was introduced as simple an Ipod but since the 6th generation it has been called the classic.
