A rookie, in baseball or any other pro sport, is a player who is playing in his first year at that level (this can also apply to any level of sports or any career for that matter). The term "rookie" is simply a term used to described somebody who is inexperienced.

The player is qualified as a rookie if he has less than 130 at bats or less than 50 innings pitched at the major league level.

A rookie is someone who is currently playing in the first year in the big leagues. A veteran is someone who has played for more than one year. A rookie could have played minor league baseball for many years however.
