You have to consider the exhaust system, the air intake system and other moving parts. Most of all, there is a big chance of a worn-out engine support.

There are a lot of things that can cause a noise as engines have many different components. There are auxiliary systems that can cause noises, too. If you have a timing light, and the noise goes in time with it, then you have a cylinder head noise.

These engines are notorious for valve noise. The valve's become gunked up very easy and and cause a lot of engine ping. Run a quality fuel system cleaner through it.

If it is a ticking coming from your oil pan, it may need some oil. If it's an automatic and grinding a lot it could be the transmission. It's important to narrow down where the noise is coming from, like what part of the engine.
