I'm offering free software for the java community. Should the website be org or com?

The site will feature options for donations to maintain the software/website. I am not sure if this would be an "organization" or a com business.

is for a company - if your goal is to share the technology as opposed to making money you should go with a . Donation run sites are rarely companies as their goal is not profit.

Actually, legally and technically it does not matter. But for the sake of the community idea, an org domain would be more appropriate.

It won't come under org because it's only given to organizations like university, colleges, trust like that. SO your website will come under com as a business site.

Internet top-level domains, "com" and "org", are not strictly regulated for usage. You may choose either in this case, and common practice is to register with both.
