That amount is on the smaller side so it could be just categorized as misdemeanor which means it could just be up to one year of jail time if any jail time at all. It really depends on the judge and the other facts of the case.

Sounds like check fraud to me. The punishment depends on a variety of factors, including aggravating circumstances. Also, different jurisdictions have different laws. But it could be up to 10 years in prison. It's typically categorized as a felony.

First, they would be charged with theft. They could also be charged with altering the check if that occurred as well if they impersonated anyone at the bank if that occurred too.
