Symptoms of bruised ribs include tenderness over the injury, pleuritic pain (deep breathing hurts), spasms of the surrounding muscles causing pain with trunk movement. A physician will listen to your lungs for any damages and check for liver or spleen damages. Chest x-rays will locate a pneumothroax or bruised lung.

If it hearts to bend, breathe and be touched in the area, it is very likely that you have done some damage to the rib area. Go to the doctor and get an x-ray done.

If you suffer from a rib injury, you will have pain and tenderness over the affected area. This can be felt when touched, but it can be felt when you do other things that put pressure on the ribs as well including coughing, breathing, laughing and movement.

Bruised rib always causes pain while you are doing inspiration and expiration of air during normal breathing. If the blow on ribs is fresh, there can be localalized pain, hematoma, tenderness and local swelling. If swelling has developed immediately after injury, it is mostly a fracture. Get Xray done immediately.
