Home is always best. If you live in the city and can't do it in front of your house, what about your backyard. If home is not feasable try a public park. Don't park into a conspicuous area as the police tends to take a look at people congragating for too long. Or if not some garages rent spaces out.

Ask friends and family for some references of good reputable places in the area. Try to find someone who specializes in engine repair.

A large garage or barn that is spacious and has the proper tools such as a crane to lift the engine. Other than those traits you can work on your cars engine almost anywhere. Because your not doing a full restoration or even just a paint job you require a lot less space.

You will need to find the warmest area. Your place must contain some automobile shoppe. Some auto parts stores let you borrow for free special tools you might need in rebuilding your engine.
