car repairs

Question by  agirl (1)

I just bought a used 2005 GMC Jimmy from a private owner. It is making a whining noise. What could that be?

I don't know much about vehicles and appreciate any info/advice.

The whining noise may be coming from a few sources. While the most likely culprit is a driven accessory (alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor, air pump, etc), whining may also come from electronic interference with the car radio. If it whines under the hood with no radio on, check anything driven by the serpentine belt

I would start with the Serpentine belt on the front of the engine. This belt usually powers your A/C, power steering, and alternator. Worn belts will sometimes whine.

The noise could be made from a belt in the engine that is either loose, needs to be greased or that is about to break.

A whining noice can be lots of different things and I suggest you take it to a mechanic to check it out. My guess would be the belts.
