I have brown cocoons in my back yard, how do I get rid of them?

Sounds like Gypsy moth. Look for egg masses on trees, outdoor furniture, firewood, and scrape into a tin of soapy water. Bands on trees may help, or ask your garden center for solutions, though they won't kill your trees- just unsightly. Pesticides may kill the predators that feed on them.

One way to get rid of them is to pick them one by one, put them into a basket and then burn them. It will take you a while but it will most likely get the job done. I would also pour gasoline on to the cocoons to ensure that the ignition is fast and furious.
