shape your mouth as if you have a mouthful of watermelon, and you are about to spit a seed. Sit up on your sitz bones so that you have lots of diaphram room to breathe. Press your shoulders down place your reed on your lower lip and top on your upper teeth, push the air out, spit that seed.

I played clarinet for several years. It is hard at first, so be patient and keep trying. The reed must be thin for a beginner. A thicker reed is harder to get sound from. You must make an "O" with your lips, so that your cheeks are tight. Do not try to blow with puffed cheeks.

The first step in learning to blow after reed is applied is to use only the barrel and mouth piece, simply put 1/4 of the tip of the mouthpiece hanging off of your lip into your mouth. Next roll your lip in a very small amount so you can close your mouth around the mouthpiece and blow.

When learning to play the clarinet remember not to bite down on the reed too hard. If you do you will just get a squeaking sound.
