In World War 1, lines of ditches were dug to provide shelter for troops from oncoming bullets and artillery. They essentially dug ditches that were miles long, and to advance forward required units going forward and digging more ditches for shelter for advancing troops. Because artillery was less effective, poison gas was used for the first time in warfare.

A trench is like a ditch. Soldiers dig foxholes to accommodate one or two soldiers and protect them from gunfire and falling debris. A trench is like one, long foxhole dug close to the front line of battle. Soldiers could fire from the trench and move from one end to another without being exposed.
