When your toddler is ready to stop napping he or she will in fact go for two to three weeks in a row without napping during nap time. Most children need 12 to 15 hours of sleep within a 24 hour period.

They will fight it harder than usual, or just may not actually sleep during "nap" time, prefering to have "quiet time". On a day that you have nothing planned let your child skip their nap, and see how they react. Judge by that to see if they still need it.

If your child is cranky or fussy by late afternoon or early evening this is a good indicator that he or she still needs a nap. Some down time for recharging can be beneficial for everyone, even if they don't sleep. Sitting quietly on their beds looking at books is a wonderful quiet activity, even for an older child.
