Most self cleaning electric razors, particularly those manufactured by Braun and Phillips work on the principle of pushing the small hairs cut from your beard along the head of the razor in one direction by utilising the motion of the small cutting blades. In this manner the hairs eventually work their way to one end where they fall out.

They are the razor version of a self cleaning oven works great on the job it is designed for, but lacks the fully self cleaning part. Also, you have to make certain it does stay clean so you don't lose any of the cutting quality. Other then that, its about as close a shave as using old faithful.

I think they work really well. My dad had a self cleaning razor and he never complained about it. It's self cleaning and it works great.
