The easiest way to replace a 36' door is to leave the jamb in place and replace only the plank. The jamb is all the wood surrounding the door; the hinges are connected to the jamb and the door. Remove the hinges from the jamb, measure carefully, and reinstall the hinges on your new door, and reinstall the door.

You'll need to go to Home Depot or Ace to get the hardware, then buy or borrow an electric drill. It's helpful to have another person with you to hold up the door as you screw it into place.
