Make sure that when you clip them that you clip the limps at an angle. Trim them all evenly. Clipping them causes new growth though. Trim them also in a triangular shape to keep the shape of the tree.

You need to know your type, but generally trim between mid-June to mid-July, your shrub has had time to get it's "spread" so you can see how you want to prune. Also, this will allow pruning before next year's buds have set, essential to next yr's growth. Evergreens are very forgiving.

You should begin trimming your evergreen bushes in early Spring to encourage new growth. Trimming should begin at the bottom where you begin removing brown, overgrown, and lagging branches. Don't forget to trim the crown. The ultimate goal is to keep its bush like shape. You can also trim up dead areas during mid October.

By the middle of July the new growth is usually finished, allowing you to see what needs trimmed. Level out top with hedge trimmers(keeping in mind what you want the finished hedge to look like), then trim sides. Remember, removing branches will alter tree's shape.
