First wash the jars to remove dust and other particles. Then lower the jars into a large pot of lukewarm water that is deep enough to completely cover them. Bring to a boil and boil for ten minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool before filling.

Wash jars in hot water and rinse them thoroughly. Drain the jars in a dish drainer. Put a skillet on the stove with water about 2 inches deep. Let the water come to a boil. Carefully place several jars in the water neck down so the opening of the jar is in the water. Boil for five minutes.

The easiest way to sterilize jars for jam is to boil them for several minutes. Be sure to boil the lids and liners, as well. After boiling, use them right away and handle them with gloves or tongs.

A dishwasher is the easiest way to sterilize jars. You can also a large pot of water and boil one or two at a time. That is harder and not as safe but it will work. Those jars get very hot in hot water for five minutes on stove top.
