Vacuum the rug regularly. Use a dry foam and absorbent pad, this uses less water to create a foam work into a pile and then vacuum. You could steam clean it. you could also shake your rug outside to get all the access dirt or dust that is in the rug.

The best advice I can give is to have it cleaned professionaly. The have the proper tools to do this and if you only do this once a year the cost is well worth it. The can prevent it from fading and add scotch guard to the finish. If this is carpet have someone come in and do it.

take the rug out side and run through the hose, add some detergeant to a bucket of water and run it over the rug. use a clean sponge and scrub over the rug, rinse out the rug with clean water, roll up the rug to get water out, then dry it in sun or drier.

You need to have it cleaned by a professional so that it won't shrink on you if you do it yourself it could become a disaster.

It depends on what kind of wool it is. If it's 100% pure wool or merino wool then you can't put the rug in a dryer because it will felt. The heat in the dryer will fuse the yarn together and make it a fabric. You can put it a washing machine but not a dryer.

Well to clean a wool rug, you will be best off using a carpet cleaner. It will get rid of all stains that are in the rug. It is best to even get it dry cleaned. This might cost more however. But it will do the job right. You can also use vinegar.

You are basically going to vaccuum it and then take a bucket of water and detergent and then run it over the rug while scrubbing it.

I would take it to a professional and have them clean it. It might cost a little bit more, but they know what they are doing.
