car repairs

Question by  Gfaaw (143)

How often does a serpentine belt need to be replaced?

I keep hearing stories about oil change places scamming people and telling them this has to be done.

I've had three diesel cars and the service manual in each recommends a change at 60,000 miles. They probably last at least 100k though.

The exact frequency that new ones are needed varies with the car. They should need replacing much less frequently than an oil change, however.

No brainer, look at the inside of the belt, if you see more than 4 cracks per inch replace it on the spot.

You can't tell you need a new serpentine belt by just looking at it. If your car has less than 100,000 miles on it, its probably a scam.

I'm not sure on this I think it probably depends on how much wear and tear is put on the car. I have a 15 year old car and to my knowledge replaced the serpentine belt once because it broke when i had to have the water pump replaced. I drove it a long time before this happened.
