You have to replace it every spring or every other. Depending on whether it is nugget mulch or shredded. Shredded breaks down quicker. It is really good for the soil.

Pine bark mulch should be replaced whenever it has been absorbed into the soil and you can see patches of dirt through the layer of mulch.

Each spring you need to add a new top layer to your pine bark mulch. This will create a new and fresh look to your mulch. The old mulch disentegrataes throughout the year with rain and natural elements. You can replace the mulch yearly, but this would require removing all the old.

Generally after seven years Pine Bark Mulch should be replaced. By this point the mulch has dried out and begun to deteriorate. It attracts slugs and worms and even birds at this point. To keep it clean and orderly just change over every 6-7 years.

When the mulch decays enough so that bare spots show through, it is time to replace it. Large sized pieces of mulch will last longer than a fine grade.
