I am playing monopoly and do not understand how much money to start with.

I say units because Monopoly is played in many different countries through the world and as such the money could be in Pounds, Euro's, Dollar's, etc. This money should be divided in the following denominations 2x500, 4x100, 1x50, 1x20, 2x10, 1x5, 5x1.

But after 2008 it was broken like this: 2x\$500 4x\$100 1x\$50 1x\$20 2x\$10 1x\$5 5x\$1. So, it really just depends on which version of the game you are playing.
