There is no mercury in Mercury dimes. They are called Mercury dimes because many people believed the image on the front of the coin was the Roman god, Mercury. It is actually a depiction of the mythological goddess Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, a classic symbol of liberty and freedom.

There is no mercury in dimes. The coin known as the "Mercury head dime" depicts the goddess Liberty wearing a winged hat, which may have caused her to be confused with the Roman messenger god Mercury. Last minted in 1945, Mercury head dimes contain a mixture of silver and copper.
