A "square" of shingles is the unit of measure widely used when calculating the material required to roof a house or building. A square of shingles will cover an area measuring is 100 square feet (which is equivalent to 10 feet by 10 feet, or 5 feet by 20 feet, etc)

First you measure each side of your roof measure from top to bottom left to right and double it to get the area. After you measure, that will give you your sqaure footage and if you are using 3tab shingles it is 3 bundles US to a square. Hopefully you measured right.

When you buy a square of shingles each square contains 100 square feet or enough to cover a 10 foot by 10 foot area. Measure your roof and using simple shingles buy a square for every 10 foot square area. If shingles are fancy or have to be lined up special, you may need more.

A 10 X 10 area or 100 square feet. The surface area of a roof is measured in squares of shingles. Each square covers 100 square feet. However, when you buy them, shingles are usually priced per bundle. In most cases, 3 bundles = 1 square. To calculate the number of bundles, measure the roof's square footage (length x width).
