There are about 750,000 Welsh speakers in the world. About 600,000 of them are in Wales; that's about 20% of the population there.

According to the Welsh Language Board, the most recent statistics (from the 2001 census) show that 582,368 people aged 3 or above are able to speak Welsh, which equates to 20. 8% of the population of the country. Although Welsh-speakers exist outside of Wales, it is difficult to accurately assess their numbers and capability.
