How many amps go to a 3-ton air conditioner?

Answer by  kipcat (1964)

The standard is 1. 5 hp per ton. Which is 4. 5 nominal hp for a 3-ton unit. 746 watts in a hp, times 4. 5, 3357 watts, for residential, divide by 220 for 15. 26 amps. The fan adds a little but not much, so a 20 amp 220 volt breaker would work.

Isn't it that 1 ton (for refrigeration terms) is equivalent to 4.7 Hp? So for 3 tonner ACU, would it be 13.2 Hp? Just confused.  add a comment

the breaker would pop instantly. As the current required to start the compressor is a multiple of the run current. Specialy on a hot day.
