How many amps can different gauge wires handle?

Answer by  DavidS (1517)

Fourteen gauge is good for 15 amps, 12 gauge is rated for 20 amps, 10 gauge is rated for 30amps, 8 gauge is rated for 40 amps and 6 gauge is rated for 50 amps. This is based on copper wire either solid or stranded single conductors. Mulitiple conductors in conduit will have a lower rating due to temperature.
