Fifteen to twenty Cichlids fit into a fifty-five gallon tank. The exact amount depends on what kind of Cichlids you are putting into your tank.

Cichlids are a very dominate fish and agressive. I would recomend that 15-20 depending on the size of the fish, so that way each fish has a couple gallons per fish give or take couple.

There are several species of American Cichlids. They have different tank requirements. The general rule for fish stocking is one inch of fully grown fish per five gallons of water.

For a 55 gallon tank, you can have about a dozen American Cichlids, if you have just Cichlids, and approximately the same number of males as females. Usually fewer than recommended works better than over crowding, which can lead to them dying off. If there are going to be other fish in the tank you will need to keep less.
