The intention of the manufacturer is that the transmission will last the life of the car. Follow the manufacter's maintenance schedule, and it should last. Don't run your car hot (as in overheated) as the radiator cools the tranny fluid, and overheating is the main cause of transmission failure.

The transmission should last as long as the car lasts. Most cars last for about 300,000 miles or 20 to 25 years.
