A female dog's estrus (period of being in heat) is differnt from primates (i. e. humans). Once in heat the bleeding will continue periodically for up to two weeks. The blood should be thin and watery. If the dog is showing signs of distress take her to a vet. To stop the bleeding spay or breek your animal.

The cycle is typically three weeks, assume approximately 21 days, but each dog can be different just like humans. You will see the bleeding from the onset of the heat cycle in the first week through the end of the cycle.

The dogs menstrual cycle will last approximately 7 months and is divided into 4 stages. Stage 1 (Poestrus) last approximately 9 days, with a bloody discharge. Stage 2(Estrus) last around 7 days and is when the female will allow mating. Stage 3(Diestrus) around 60 days, and she wont allow mating. Stage 4(Anestrus) about 5 months. and then it starts again.

A dog's heat cycle can last at least one month. I believe, though it has been a long time since I have seen a dog capable of a heat cycle, that it can last for 3 months at max. Take her to the vet though in case of something else.
