The first Barnes & Noble was created 93 years ago, with the partnership of William Barnes and G. Clifford Noble in 1917. The New York City store was purchased by Leonard Riggio in 1971, which began the empire we see today.

Barnes & Noble has been around a long time. It started out as a book printing store in 1873 in Wheaton, Illinois. The original owner was Charles Noble. In 1917, his son, William, and G. Clifford Noble opened a book store in New York City. The corporation has been headquartered there every since.

Whilst Barnes and Noble seems very modern it actually isn't at all! It first opened in Wheaton, Illinois in 1873 as a printing business. The book retailer opened in New York City, New York in 1917.
